(1995-2006)
Celticmoon Collies began over a decade ago in 1995 with the purchase of a lovely sable merle male puppy, Essengees JP Patches, who we named Shyan. Shyan was bought as a family pet and was my introduction to the collie. He was a very bright and captivating young dog and always full of hi jinx. Like many people with their first collie, I quickly fell in love with this intelligent breed and couldn’t imagine how I had ever lived without one. The only thing that puzzled me was why more people didn’t own one. I saw very few collies out and about and I thought what a shame, don’t they know what they are missing? I decided then and there that I would put the collies that I owned in the spotlight so that the public could see what a versatile and intelligent gentle breed they were. Shyan and I started basic dog obedience classes at 7 months of age and I became hooked. We then looked for a better trainer and soon found my now good friend and mentor Donna Bradley of Tymtels Dog Obedience Club and the more serious competition obedience instructions began. Boy did I ever have a lot to learn! Donna’s guidance and 25 years of experience taught us a lot over the next decade. With hard work and a lot of patience, Shyan earned almost a dozen High In Class awards, many Runner up to High In Trial, and had an average of 193/200 in novice, open and Utility and was our first ever Obedience Champion. Shyan made us all very proud by being the #2 rough collie in Canada in obedience for 1999 and 2000 and in 2002 after taking a break to do our utility title he was the #1 rough collie in Canada The following year in 2003 as a 7 year old veteran he was the #5 rough collie in Canada. Sadly we lost Shyan at 11 years of age and he is now enjoying life at the rainbow bridge.
It wasn’t long before we began searching for our first show dog We decided to contact Susan Bertrand of RAINFOREST COLLIES. She had a lovely big blue merle male who had just come from Japan, BISS Can/Am Ch Barkeys Lonely Chaplin and I knew right away that as soon as he was bred I would want a puppy and was put on her wait list. When a breeding was done and the puppies were born I was very excited and looked forward to the young female that would hopefully be my foundation and another stepping stone into the world of collies.

The Bertrands were gracious enough to let me have their pick puppy on a co-own who was to be called Rainforest’s Gingersnap (Ginger). Ginger was a great little show dog and turned out to be a beauty. She finished her championship quickly owner handled under respected breeder judge Jim Frederickson. Ginger was a star not just in conformation but in obedience as well . In a span of 11 months she earned her novice and open titles with 8 High In classes, a High In Trial and a runner up to High In Trial and gained the #4 spot for top obedience collies in Canada in 2002. We looked forward to the day she would have lovely puppies, but unfortunately Ginger never blessed us with pups. And so life went on as we started agility with Ginger and added a new addition to the household with another beauty.
Into our lives bounced Shadow. She was co-bred by the Bertrand’s and Nancey Anstruther of TALLYWOOD COLLIES. Her dam is the beautiful MBISS Can/Am Ch Tallywood Rainforest Radiant ROMX,HIC and her sire Ch Tallywood Clarion Absolute . Shadow was a breath of fresh air, a full of herself little minx and it was clear to see she was going to be great at herding.

Shadow did very well in the conformation ring finishing by the time she was 16 months old. She had a RWB win and runner up to best in sweeps at the Collie Club Of BC specialty in the fall of 2001. We started obedience and sheep herding with her and she excelled at everything . I looked forward to training her, she was so much fun! She is the most versatile and out going of our collies and to date is the most titled collie that resides at Celticmoon. In 2007 after quite a long break from the obedience ring we went back in for her CDX and shadow earned the #2 spot for top obedience collie in Canada. I again looked forward to the day that I would be waiting for puppies. But as fate would have it, again I was not to have puppies . Shadow unfortunately had complications with her uterus . Many attempts were made to breed her but to no avail. As disappointing as it was I looked at all three of our collies and thought about how much they had taught me over the years and the bond that we shared and the immense joy they brought into our lives.
One day I received a phone call from Carol Zielke of CIEL COLLIES. I had admired the smooth collie for a long time and was searching for just the right one. Carol mostly bred smooths and she phoned and invited me to a puppy evaluation party and I was flattered that she had thought of me. As we went over all the puppies it was very clear which one was the pick of this litter. He stood out like a shining star. He was already spoken for and I began to persuade Carol into letting me take him home. I was so thrilled to have this smooth tri-colored boy. He was gorgeous and moved great and I could see the beautiful adult he would become. We named him Ciel Celticmoons Dark Lover (Fabio).

Fabio was to be my first serious show dog, and that he was. He finished his CKC championship at 7 months, his AKC championship at 12 months and his International championship at 20 months. Fabio won many puppy groups, a Best Puppy In Show and was a multiple group placing puppy in Canada. In the fall of 2004 at the tender age of 22 months he won Best of Breed at the Collie Club Of BC specialty under breeder judge Sue Symington. He finished in 2004 by becoming the #1 smooth collie in Canada and the #5 collie of both varieties. In the US his first wk-end out at just 7 months old he won a 5 point major over specials in a huge entry of over 20 smooths and was RWD under breeder judge Danny Cardoza at the Overlake collie specialty that same day. His International Championship was earned in three straight V-1 ratings and a group 2 placement. Fabio is a very tightly line bred smooth who’s sire Am Ch Lisara Ciels Night After Night (bred by Carmen Leneord of LISARA COLLIES) is out of the gorgeous Am Ch Countryview’s Tonight’s the Night. He is truly a stunning boy and continued to win at the group level until he retired to preformance sports. So I had a dog, not a foundation bitch and I thought I had better go to ” Plan B”.

Plan B was to lease a bitch to breed to Fabio. Thank goodness for friends! our friend Chris Milroy of WYSDOM COLLIES had a lovely maiden bitch (Can Ch Highlanders Divine Wysdom HIC) who’s pedigree I had admired for years. She is sired by the beautiful Ch Southland’s Bowen Island ROM,AOM (Best of Breed at the 2002 American national) X Highlanders Rumor Has It. Delilah was bred by HIGHLANDER COLLIES and was imported to BC, Canada by Chris. Chris agreed to lease us Delilah. She had a beautiful personality, good movement, a lovely headpiece and tons of coat along with clean health checks and OFA. It was going to be a complete outcross but I decided to take a chance. My husband and I fell in love with her. She stayed with us for 4 months and was a pleasure to have around the house. Delilah blessed us with 9 puppies one Friday morning. Thank goodness I had learned all I could about whelping! not only did the first puppy struggle to make its entrance into the world, but every pup after that came out so quickly that I had to assist her. I was fortunate to have homes waiting for all of the puppies.
We kept a beautiful smooth sable boy Celticmoons Dash of Decorum (Dash), a smooth tri boy went to Alberta to a show home and three of our girls also found their way into co-owned show homes. And so the story begins with these promising puppies. I suppose we should mention that along the way we also acquired a lovely Belgian Tervuren puppy from our good friends the Brearleys (LONGHAUL BELGIANS). I had also had a passion for the Belgian Shepherd and when Karen offered us the pick of the litter as a token of friendship it was too hard to resist! We named him Longhaul’s RPM at Celticmoon. And revs per minute he was wearing out our grass everywhere he ran. He kept the collies in shape. I think the collies thought he was nuts because he ran laps all day long! Diesal (as we called him) was a sweetheart. Diesal and I finished his Can. Championship at the tender age of 10 months. He won Best Of Breed and Best Puppy In breed many times and also won a best Puppy In Group along the way. At the Belgian National 2005 (in Canada) He won his class in sweeps even after dumping all of his coat the wk before. . Unfortunately we lost Diesal to a tragic accident. He has left a big whole in our hearts .Diesal did however, sire one litter and from that litter we have the pic. A lovely gray Belgian Tervuren girl who we named Groenen N Celticmoon’s Amulet (Charmer).
In closing we would like to say that all of our dogs are our loved and appreciated family pets. The championships and the performance titles are a testament of love, bond and friendship between man and dog. We strive to give them a quality of life they deserve by working their mind as well as their bodies. ” A title is just a piece of paper, it’s the time we share with our dogs that is precious to us. A title is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, and permanently recorded”.
